Upgrade items in Guild Wars 2

Almost all items in Guild Wars 2 can be upgraded. This process is possible with upgrade components. These are items that can be added to weapons, armour, trinkets and gathering tools. Equipment must have an Upgrade Slot to accept the component, and most upgrade components require the item to be above a certain level. Upgrade components present bonuses (such as increased attributes or effects added to attacks) when owning that part. Enhancements may be created, bought, found or received as a reward. Enhancement components in an item may be replaced by another enhancement component, but this will overwrite the previous upgrade. Components placed in items cannot be recovered except by collecting the item (using the appropriate Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool) or using the Upgrade Extractor. Equipment from karma merchants often comes with an upgrade component that cannot be replaced or taken away. However, glyphs and upgrades of legendary equipment can be swapped freely.

                                    Types of Improvement Items

• Jewels

These are enhanced versions of gems created by a jeweller; they provide great bonuses, but can only be placed in trinkets.

• Runes

They can only be placed on armour. Each piece of armour can have no more than one rune. Placing the same runes on different pieces of armour worn together will          give the wearer additional cumulative benefits.

       Runes are noteworthy for the fact that they can grant abilities and characteristics not available through any other equipped source, such as creating effects on impact, increasing movement speed and reducing weapon change time. Thus, the choice of runes can be more complex and beneficial to a build than the choice of accessories. However, other rune sets simply provide great benefits to the base stats and can be replaced by other components such as gems and sigils.

• Sigils.

These items can only be placed in weapons. Each one-handed weapon may have only one sigil. Two-handed weapons may have two separate sigils, but both must be different. (You cannot double or otherwise 'improve' the advantage of a sigil by adding another weapon of the same type to the weapon currently in use). Sigils have different effects, such as attacks that are triggered by critical hits, passive damage or attribute bonuses, or effects that are triggered when switching to a weapon with that slot.

• Infusions.

This is a special type of enhancement components used for equipment not ascended through the amulet, as well as legendary equipment. Enrichments are enhancement components that can be placed in amulets with ascension. Enrichments placed in an item can be recovered by collecting the item or by using an Infusion Extraction Device.

• Glyphs.

These can only be placed in gathering tools. Glyphs increase the speed and function of collecting tools. Unlike other enhancement components, glyphs can be removed and inserted indefinitely and will be placed in the inventory if replaced by another glyph.
